Vällamägi lies in the Haanja Heights, in the same cluster of hills as Estonia's highest point, Suur Munamägi (317 m). Vällamägi's distinctive feature is the panoramic view across southern Estonia that opens from its highest point.

The Vällamäe Hiking Trail is a one-way long-distance hike heading into the northern part of Haanja Nature Park, crossing the region with Estonia's highest hills. The trail runs through a landscape formed by nine lakes and moraine hills.

Strong variation in elevation — climbs and descents of over 40 m occur over short distances. Chanterelles and blueberries make an autumn hike a pleasure.

In winter, the slopes of the heights offer opportunities for skiing. In spring the trail is partly muddy.
